The initial testing process consist of a CHIP physical ability test, a written examination, and an oral examination. Once an applicant has successfully completed these phases, their name is placed on an eligibility list for future openings. When there is an opening, the vacancy is filled from the eligibility list.
If the applicant is chosen from the list, they will be fingerprinted and a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted. During the process, the applicant will be the subject of a polygraph examination, psychological examination and participate in another oral interview.
If hired by the City of Bristol, the recruit is considered a probationary candidate and will be required to attend the 21-week training program at the Police Officer Standards and Training Council (POST). Upon successful completion of all portions of the POST program, the recruit is issued an initial certification as a police officer in the State of Connecticut. The recruit will return to the Bristol Police Department and be placed in a 12-week Field Training Officer (FTO) program. The recruit must successfully pass the FTO program and will remain on a probationary status for 18 months. After the probationary period is successfully completed, the recruit will become a fulltime regular officer.
