How Do I Dispose of...........?
Check below for a list of items and the disposal guidelines for them.

The CT DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) also has information posted on disposal.

All of the guidelines below are for Residential items only - no Commercial or Business items. Transfer Station/Permit information

Aluminum Siding
Bring to metal recycler, or to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Must be 4 foot lengths or less.
Ammunition
Contact any State Police barracks or resident State Trooper's office (Burlington). 
Antifreeze/Engine Oil
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Five (5) gallon maximum.
Appliances
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Asbestos Shingles/Tiles
Service not available through the city. Contact CT DEP  for more information.
Asphalt/Bricks/Cement Blocks/Rock/Dirt/Sand/Sod
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. 
Asphalt Shingles
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Batteries
  • Alkaline: Household batteries (AAA, AA, C or D - not rechargeable) - Dispose in regular rubbish.
  • Rechargeable: batteries commonly found in cordless phones, power tools, portable electronics and cell phones.  Most Radio Shack and Wal-Mart stores will recycle rechargeable batteries, or call 1-800-8-BATTERY. Can also be brought to the Transfer Station (with a permit) or City Hall Public Works.
  • Car Batteries: Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. 

Boat - Fiberglass
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Cut into sections no larger than 4 foot by 4 foot.
Branches/Brush
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit or schedule a curbside collection by calling Public Works. Curbside Collection - must be tied and bundled, no larger than 6 inches in diameter and 4 foot long. We do not accept stumps - contact Greencycle at (860)674-8855.
Bulkhead/Hatchway Door
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. For Bulk Pickup - take apart and stand on side.
Camper - Pop Up
Service not available.
Car/Vehicle Parts
Service not available.
Carpet
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Maximum 4 foot length, rolled and tied.
Cell Phones

Ceramic Tile
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
CFL's (Compact Fluorescent Bulbs)/Fluorescent Bulbs
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Home Depot and IKEA also accept CFL's for recycling. Fluorescent bulbs up to 8 feet can be brought to the Transfer Station. Regular light bulbs go in rubbish.
Clothing/Textiles/Shoes
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Place items in recycle area. Please bag clothing, shoes, blankets, belts and handbags.
Computers
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. see Electronic Recycling
Cooking/Vegetable/Olive Oil
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Strain and filter oil, place with automobile oil at the Transfer Station.
Corrugated Cardboard
Curbside recycling (cut to 3' x 3') or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Doors
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Wood doors are limited to 4 foot by 4 foot sections.
Driveway Sealant
Latex can go in regular rubbish after it is dried. Non-latex - bring to Household Hazardous Waste Collection.  
Electronics

Fencing

Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Wire fencing should be rolled and tied. Wood fencing is limited to 4 foot by 4 foot sections.
Fill
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Fire Extinguishers
Must be empty. Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Fish Tank
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Flares - Highway or Road
Saturate is water in a covered can, then place in regular rubbish.
Furniture
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Maximum 4 foot lengths.
Garage Door
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Maximum 4 foot lengths.
Gas/Gas & Oil Mixture/Kerosene
Bring to Household Hazardous Waste Collection.
Glass/Mirrors
Break glass, place in cardboard box labeled "broken glass", tape securely and place in regular rubbish.
Grass Clippings/Yard Waste
Bring to Transfer Station with a Residential Permit or subscribe to Yard Waste Collection Service.
Hot Tub
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Maximum 4 foot lengths.
Insulation
Bring to Transfer Station with a Residential Permit and place in burnables box. Small amounts can be bagged and placed in regular rubbish.
Lawn Mowers/Snow Blowers
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Please remove all gas and oil.
Leaves
Bring to Transfer Station with a permit, or subscribe to Yard Waste Collection Service, or place in approved leaf bags for curbside collection during spring/fall pickup.
Linoleum
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Rolled and tied in 4 foot lengths.
Logs
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. No stumps, four foot length maximum and less than 6 inches in diameter.
Lumber/Wood Shingles
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Maximum 4 foot lengths. For a Bulk Pickup, lumber should be bundled with nails removed.
Magazines/Newspapers/Phone Books
Curbside recycling or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Mattress/Box Spring
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Medicines/Prescription Drugs
See DEP Guidelines. Please do not put chemotherapy drugs in regular rubbish.
Needles/Sharps
Place in a sealed, puncture-proof container in regular rubbish.
Oil Tank
Cut in half, drain and remove sludge, bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Paint
- Latex/Oil Based - Bring to Transfer Station with a Residential Permit (limit 10 one gallon cans). See also PaintCare info for recycling.  Click here for information on large volumes of paint (300 gallons or more).
Piano
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Separate metal and cut to 4 foot lengths.
Plaster/Sheetrock
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Poison Ivy
Place in black trash bags in regular rubbish or bring bags to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Pool Table
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. No slate, cut wood to 4 foot lengths.
Propane/Helium Tanks
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Tanks, other than grill propane tanks, must have valves removed prior to disposal.
Satellite Dish
Bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Cut any dish larger than 4 feet in length.
Scrap Metal
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Shredded Paper
Place in brown paper bag in recycle barrel for curbside collection, or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit.
Smoke Detectors
Return to Manufacturer per their instructions, not allowed in regular rubbish.
Snowmobiles

Televisions
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Can also bring to Electronics Waste Collection events
Tires
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Up to 16 inches, no rims. 2 tire limit at bulk pickup, 4 tire limit at Transfer Station.
Thermostats
May be brought to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Only complete thermostats can be accepted - no disassembled vials or containers of mercury (bring these to the next Household Hazardous Waste collection event).  Thermostats are accepted at no additional charge if accompanying other no charge items or if the total delivery is under 100 pounds.
Toilets/Porcelain
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Limit of 1 at a time.
Trampoline
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Remove canvas and cut metal to 4 foot lengths.
VHS Tapes 
Dispose of in regular rubbish.
Windows
Schedule a Bulk Pickup or bring to the Transfer Station with a Residential Permit. Four foot sections, remove glass for bulk collection.
